Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) has earned a Diamond level Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing reliable and safe electric service. This is MPU’s third time in a row receiving the highest designation, Diamond level, and fourth time receiving the designation in total.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) has earned the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2023. The utility earned the Gold status award in the category for utilities with 110,000 to 249,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure.

Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) experienced a power outage that affected approximately 1,000 customers early morning Thursday, February 1, 2024. The cause of the outage was a failed submarine cable at a river crossing. Electric Distribution staff were able to restore power to 95% of the affected customers within two hours and the remaining 5% within four hours. Repairs will need to be made to the submarine cable.

MPU is rolling out a new community solar program where our electric customers will have the opportunity to purchase solar panel generation from a solar garden in Manitowoc. This facility is being built off Hecker Road, just south of Viebahn Street, at an old gravel pit site. Customers will have the ability to purchase solar energy with no upfront investment, unlike traditional rooftop solar installs.
