Fiber

Man's hand holding bunch of fiber optic wires

Manitowoc Public Utilities (MPU) installed a 33-mile fiber optic ring around the City of Manitowoc in 2004.

The fiber was designed to provide a robust, dedicated and secure communications infrastructure with limitless communications speed.

What Are Fiber Optics?

  • Composed of fine glass threads (fibers), used to transmit data between two points at the speed of light
  • Each fiber is capable of transmitting high bandwidth messages from one point to another by light waves contained in the fiber strand
  • Dedicated, secure, state-of-the-art, unaffected by electro-magnetic interference

MPU offers long and short-term leases of this “dark fiber” to connect any two or more customer facilities within the City of Manitowoc. Connections to facilities outside of the city limits are provided through MPU’s partnership with third-party vendors. Customers who own and operate their own communications equipment can use dark fiber as a dedicated and secure connection between their equipment. These fiber facilities have been successfully used by several businesses; Manitowoc County, the Manitowoc Public School District, the City of Manitowoc, and MPU.
