Water ConservationDon't Waste Water We're lucky here in Manitowoc. We have the world's largest reserve of fresh water right at our door step. But drinking water is not free. It is a valuable resource. Here are a few tips on what you can do at home to conserve water. 1. Stop that leak! Check every faucet in your home for leaks. A slow drip can waste 15 to 20 gallons per day. Fix it and you can save 6,000 gallons per year. To find out how much water water you are wasting, visit the American Water Works Association web site and try their drip calculator: http://www.awwa/org/Advocacy/learn/conserve/dripcalc.cfm 2. Just like a leaky faucet, toilets tank fill valves can leak as well. To check if yours is wasting water, simply put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. Without flushing, wait a few minutes to see if the color shows up in the bowl. If it does, that means the toilet is in need of repair. It's not uncommon to loose 100 gallons of water per day from a toilet leak. Manitowoc Public Utilities also has available leak check tablets. Just stop by the office and ask for them! 3. Limit your time in the shower, or don't fill the bath tub too full. Or consider using a low flow shower head. Most shower heads allow a 5 to 10 gallon per minute flow rate. New, energy efficient shower heads cut the flow rate down to 1 to 2 gallons per minute. Newer shower head designs spray water at higher velocities, so you can hardly tell the difference. An not only will you be saving water, you will be saving energy to heat water, too! 4. Run you automatic dish washer or clothes washer with full loads only. 5. Finally, water your lawn and garden with good sense. Avoid watering during the mid-day heat, or when it is very windy. Also, avoid watering the driveway or sidewalk.
